There's a difference between a game which has proven itself over the last years (decade) and a completely new random FPS game with a shitty name for that matter.

Why would anyone even botter? They're obviously getting paid to do this. They toss in some big names from a couple of games and hope other players will follow because their "idol" plays it.

It treads on well-marked territory so Quakers feel threatened. It's simplified to the point that skill curve and (lack of) accessability aren't as ridiculous as in Quake games, meaning a flood of noobs. Different, simpler mechanics means the game IS for noobs, which in turn means the Quaker master race has to scoff at the very sight of it. Possibly even disdainfully frown. Some extremists, i'd imagine, already begun ringing for the butler to order the whipping of the peasant that brought fair Shootmania to their attention.

no, splash damage was never interested in esports. same as id software. brink was released with a strange spectator mode and no demo function... and it was a very console style game.

other people said before the release it "had esport potential". for example said the fly from esl after a promo showcase on xbox. esl was highly searching for a new game to push. at the time for me it was clear its just hype - but i like splash games. btw enemy territory is unplayable in base mode, it needed custom maps, fixed abuses for basic maps and a competition mod like etpro.

maybe splash damage said when asked something like "sure its for esports too" but every studio would said this when asked.

I've watched a good hour of snoozemania in total, colwn games mainly and I have to say it was painful to watch, but I at least gave it a try. After I watched the first round, I'd basically seen everything that this game has to offer at this point. I understand why so many quake pros are playing it, which is obviously for the easy money, so I'm certainly not bashing anybody for playing it. I just don't understand how people can enjoy watching it. Although I say the same about cs, so... :/

How about this:

4vs4 5 minute rounds.
Give them rockets,rail and lg all using the same energybar (sprinting too).

Use two goals and the team that kills the opponents or control both wins the round.

Look, Dreamhack IS NOT a quake event; it is the bigger lan competition in the world, and it hosts several different games; quake is not even the bigger hosted, instead reading the numbers only one other game have had less viewers, if i'm not wrong;
due to the fact you didn't understand, 15K/16k peoples of the 20000 overalls viewers where logging in to watch the LOL final ( look, it's not a joke: there's a game called LOL, league of legends, which is more played and followed than quake live), due to the fact that the quake live final have been in late;

Why should we? The game is fucking crap, "OMG the guy with rail should kill 3 guys will plasmalike shitty rockets". I watched 5 minutes of it and every time when it's 3v1 the player goes the same route and his 3 opponents are camping behind the walls. Jesus, how boring can it get?

On the other hand, if people will still play Quake and we'll have at least one online tournament once a week (<3 Zotac) I'm fine with it. I won't watch or play this kind of FPS.

esreality is NOT a quake community website, quake just happens to be the first competitive FPS, and xsreality was one of the first esports websites, and is the only one of those still around. it had unreal, CS sections that were pretty damn popular. this is how it's always been, painkiller news, promode news, quake 4 news, enemy territory news, etc. esreality is a 'hardcore FPS'/'esports' website, it's general. QuakeLive just happens to be the most popular game in this crowd, but it needs to co-exist.

this shootmania push is a push, but it's not forceful or trying to exclude quake for anything. SM is a new, modern FPS intended to be in the spirit of all the games ESR always covered.

CS had other website, esreality wasnt even in the top 10, same with unreal, ..us quakers actually hated unreal..

I don't think we would even post painkiller news if it wasn't for the many quakers participating. You could say shootmania is similar to that, and it is, but the frequency of SH major news should be fair in comparison to other FPS games like q4,enemy territory,warsaw etc.

That's simply not true. UT and CS players were mocked, insulted, their threads were spammed and trolled to oblivion. And they all left. Admins never tried to protect them.

You can argue it was not supposed to become that way and you can argue that it's bad and it will kill ESR eventually. And you are right.

But currently this is Quake site (nobody except Quakers is still here) and Quakers were for far too long allowed to troll other games. Nobody moderated those threads. You cannot pretend that's not the fact.

So, with all that known you are suprised at people's reaction at your aproach to this thread? You don't think it would have been better if these new editorial policies were announced in advance instead of just banning people who were only doing the same thing everyone's been doing here for 10 years without consequence?

In fact the majority of people who I have spoken to who played the game (including many current quake pros) enjoyed playing it a lot while saying there is still a lot of stuff wrong with it and much room for improvement (read: the game is in beta).

Nor something I would watch. If it wasn't for the quake celebrities in that tournament and them saying we should give it a chance I wouldn't be watching it.

I watched some of the tournament now and the game just seems overly simplistic with none of the dimensions (map control, items, weapon choice) that make Quake so great. Imagine a player like Rapha playing this .. He's brilliant in these aspects in Quake but I suspect he would be almost indistinguishable from most other players in Shootmania.

French stream is unwatchable (at least for me) and is 1 map behind, english stream is a restream of a private own3d stream which is laggy and in poor quality.
It looks really amateurish and yet they seem to have a lot of money for everything that isn't needed.

I haven't played shootmania so I won't say that it's a bad game or that it sucks to play, but strictly speaking as a spectator, this is a profoundly boring game to watch. And am I the only one who doesn't think we need to see the casters between every round? Maybe between games, but every round they swtich to their faces and I really don't want to see them struggle to feign enthusiasm on camera every minute.

Maybe this game is fun to play, but it's so dreadfully boring to spectate, I really doubt this game goes anywhere in esports. I mean I'm all for having a new fast FPS game in esports, but this is unwatchable. Again, this game may be fun as hell to play, I don't know.

I like it. Its a great show however...

The shorter round format is way better than quakes long rounds for spectating but these may be too short and repetetive

The flag zone needs to be a lot bigger otherwise the game will be centered around the pole which is rather boring and shallow. Make it about 20x20 meter (no point if there is a defender in the zone).

It was quite entertaining I have to admit. Bigest reason were quake pros (and CS players getting owned. I know that reasembles quake more than cs but still - feels good :-) ) but it was a neat show without delays, short interviews, cheering audience and hot dancers during technical intermissions. I liked the format and I guess ppl who were there irl liked it even more and had some additional entertainments.
I like the fact that it's easy to learn and understand the maps for the audience - it's a big problem for fps games. I was watching some w$w matched today and it was hard for me to learn the map (and without it the game looks like a series of accidental encounters).
I feel like commentary lacks any insight (understandable at this point). I'd love to hear one of top players commentating.

Still the game is very simplistic and I don't consider it a competitor for quake style games neither for playing nor watching.

Sadly, I believe it's because of the simplicity that the game can succeed. How easy is to understand the game at first glance? Just have to look at today's society and the fast consumption frenzy

They did a good job at making it easier for casual audience who don't play the game and I think there is a thing or two that quake type games could learn from them. I remember nvc and disrepute trying to explain the maps to the audience before TDM final @ DH and it was great idea. It's a very important thing for accidental audience/newcomers - watching todays w$w stream reminded me of that. Shootmania did a very good job on that part with over the top view.
Quake duel isn't that hard to understand too if it's explained correctly (and I did it few times). It's just harder to learn to play it.
I think that there is a big demand for esport from non-playing or casual audience just like in real sports. For example ql CA/TDM/CTF players watching duel tournaments There is nothing wrong with it - we don't need to try turning them into hardcore duelers. Instead it should be made easier for them to watch and understand the game by explaining duel rules, maps and skill it takes to be a dueler prior to every major final.

When it comes to comentators - they are doing they job. It's a little bit sad that fighting skills are so reduced but still beautiful flick rail is a beautiful flick rail no matter if it's quake or shootmania or some other game and there is no reason not to get excited about it :-)

Completely agree. Quake needs to be explained to be understandable by new audiences, specially when you have a big mob watching the game like the last DH final, which I think failed at that aspect (not blaming casters tho). Quake thrives by its complexity and you have to breakdown that for new players so they can start to understand the potential of the game.

True... It's their job to give excitement to the viewers, I forgot that :)

watching this game made me think 2 things:
1) It looks like a flawed and very simpler CA, but with an objective to fulfil.
2) put that pylon/flag in the middle of dm6/Hidden fortress/pickyourfavoriteQLmap and make them play 3vs3 at QL CA.

that's true actually, but about making ql to shootmania
well, then not exactly... of course you can just mod ql just a bit to make it look exactly like this game, but it won't be the same without so much support, tournaments, ads, and cash behind it, you know...
Gameplay isn't the only thing that actually matters and keeps ppl playing/following the game (at least not nowadays).

As much as I dislike the actual gameplay I did enjoy watching the stream as I did with the the painkiller world tour. There's just something about games being well presented.

There are many form of censorship, and letting some people to express them without always having to fight is also a way to preserve good places for expression.

Having the capacity make negative comments, that's cool. But when some players flood of negative comments, I think they are trying to deny the game to be discussed correctly, maybe in order to avoid it to take some audience to their favorite game, which is the best compliment you can make as a gamer btw.

Maybe the first action should be to have a vote to know if ShootMania is legitimate to be discussed on this site. It would clear things up as the intentions of some.

ESR is (was) one of the gaming related websites that's almost censorship free. That's what makes ESR what it is, not that most news are about quake. Only known banned users in the recent years were raythenoob and dutra, who had more than 1000 posts of just complaints about QL.

Fact is 99% of users here dislike SM. The remaining 1% (me included) is composed of people who like playing new games but haven't tried it yet. I haven't seen a single known player saying he likes SM.
Another fact is peak viewers of DH summer was 51 (not 51k. 51), even though you are putting several thousands of dollars to get players and host live events, and probably now sponsoring this site or paying Demiurge himself to ban people who dislike your game.

When 50% present themselves as 99%, and when that pushes out the moderate and quiet majority, who know they haven't even tried the game, something is wrong. Cypher: First of all, I already said it, not first time, I don't understand the people, like people on ESReality that are talking trash about this game. I feel they didn't try it. In general, everybody who tries the game say it's fun. It's really fun. It lacks of modes like Quake has, like OSP but in general it's a really good teamplay game. There is teamplay but at the same time you can win a round on your own with railgun. It's a mix of duel and teamplay.

A group of players can make censorship by conducting a fight against a game. Somebody making a good comment being intimated by the others being negative, aggressive and sometimes insulting. And even if they feel they are the majority, and need to lie about this sometimes, it shall not give them the right to do it, even 99%. So, if you care about censorship, you shall be sensible to this one as well. It is common in politics, religions etc.

But since many topics looks like one way battle to defend a game or another, I doubt that's the real topic here unfortunately. The ban you talk about are even a good illustration for the need of moderation when people starts to look more for fight than for fun.

And I hope you really look for fun here, like many others are.

it's all about limits. Moderation here was very relaxed at the beginning, but every year it's getting worse.

I'm only saying I prefer it that way than banning users because of their opinions, limit being if they do it constantly (at least more than 100 posts like that) without posting about anything else (like raythenoob and dutra).

and btw I want the game to succeed. I posted that many times already. Thing is to me ESR matters more than SM's promotion.
